During the last decade the tremendous success of mobile phone systems has triggered considerable technological advances as well as the investigation of mathematical models and optimization algorithms to support planning and management decisions. In this chapter, we give an overview of some of the most significant optimization problems arising in planning second and third generation cellular networks, we describe the main corresponding mathematical models, and we briefly mention some of the computational approaches that have been devised to tackle them. For second generation systems GSM , the planning problem can be subdivided into two distinct subproblems: coverage planning, in which the antennas are located so as to maximize service coverage, and capacity planning, in which frequencies are assigned to the antennas so as to maximize a measure of the overall quality of the received signals. For third generation systems UMTS network planning is even more challenging, since, due to the peculiarities of the radio interface, coverage and capacity issues must be simultaneously addressed. This paper seeks to introduce how AI technologies will empower intelligent networks, which are increasingly becoming integral to simplified 5G networks and services. Its scope extends to four key areas; firstly a baseline understanding on the intelligent network concept, followed by architecture framework, thirdly, the level classification of AI in Network for realising the intelligent network step by step and lastly a call for the contribution of case studies of AI in Network in the industry. Artificial intelligence is made up of 3 principal branches, big data, automation and artificial intelligence. Big data gathers large data sets on which analytics are applied to gain insights and enhanced decision making. Automation is where machines follow pre-programmed rules to run processes, generally used for repetitive tasks. The final area is most advanced — Artificial intelligence where machines perform cognitive functions similar to those attributed to humans.

To accommodate the ever-expanding wireless data traffic volumes, mobile network operators are complementing their macrocellular networks by deploying low-power base stations or small cells to offload traffic from congested macrocells and to reuse spectrum. To that end, Ultra Dense Network UDN deployments provide means to aggressively reuse spectrum, thus providing significant enhancements in terms of system capacity. However, these deployments entail several challenges, including the increased complexity in network planning and optimization. In this paper, we propose a versatile optimization framework for planning UDN deployments. The planning and optimization framework is underpinned by metrics that consider scalability in terms of number of users, cost of densification, and fairness. The proposed methodology is evaluated using a real-world UDN planning case.
