Cell adhesion and communication is one of the most fascinating fields of modern biology. How do cells receive information from the environment and from neighboring cells?

Plant and animal cells have several differences and similarities. For example, animal cells do not have a cell wall or chloroplasts but plant cells do. Animal cells are mostly round and irregular in shape while plant cells have fixed, rectangular shapes. Plant and animal cells are both eukaryotic cells , so they have several features in common, such as the presence of a cell membrane, and cell organelles, like the nucleus, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum.

Similarities Between Plant and Animal Cells

Cells are the smallest functional units of life in all organisms. Ask students, do all cells look the same? Which structures might be the same in both a plant and an animal cell?

Which might be different? Have students read and discuss the Plant Cell and Animal Cell infographics. In pairs, have students create a Venn diagram or use the one provided comparing and contrasting the two types of cells. When finished, have student discuss their findings as a class, summarizing the similarities and differences noted.

Although they are both eukaryotic cells, there are unique structural differences between animal and plant cells.
