The Definitive Edition. Edited by Charles W. Annoted Edition by Daniel R. The Definitive Edition has been long awaited by scholars and historians of the thought of the philosopher and pragmatist social psychologist. The editorial project of the University of Chicago Press followed this Definitive Edition with the publication of The Timeliness of George Herbert Mead , a collection of the proceedings of the international conference held in April at the University of Chicago, also edited by Hans Joas and Daniel Huebner and already reviewed in this Journal IX, 2, The appendix is, indeed, the real treasure of this new edition, the text of which, with the numbering of the pages, remains the same as the edition, with some correction of misprints included in the first edition.
The critical analysis of sources such as that carried out by Huebner allows us to remodel and relocate this work of Mead within an overall assessment of his production. He repeatedly stressed the importance of the use of behavioral psychology for the understanding of the mental processes of the human being. However, he also specified that the observation of behavior should be considered as one of the methods of psychology, not the only one: it is inevitable to take the observation of behavior as a starting point, but one cannot a-priori deny consciousness because there is no agreement on the meaning of this term.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that in a lecture on behaviorism in Movements of Thought in the Nineteenth Century , one of a series that Mead delivered in and which were subsequently edited into book form by Merritt H.
This content, however, is one which we cannot completely bring within the range of our psychological investigation. We find difficulty even with that. But supposing we did, we could not have the sort of physiological organisms which the physiologist implies as a counterpart of the psychological process. It may be the stimulus which sets the process going, but it is a thing. There is a category under which you can bring all these stimuli which are qualitatively different but they are all things.
The hand, with the erect posture of the human animal, is something in which he comes in contact, something by which he grasps. Concerning this and other points, Huebner notes how difficult it is to determine how much Mead contributed to their formulation.
There are emphasized, they are the ones that come back, select and repeat themselves. Here we have a mechanism out of which the significant symbol arises.
They have no meaning to the parrot such as they have in human society. It depends on the type of responses to certain stimuli: certain responses are present in attitudes, and they are beginnings of reactions, responses to an object that are included in our experience. In this sense, there is consciousness of the object. It is the physical self which is the social self. It is the self which has such and such expression, wears such and such clothes. What must be reiterated is that the re-edition of such an important work in the philosophical, sociological and psychological panorama of the twentieth century offers an essential contribution to various disciplines that are now undergoing rapid change.
Mead, in fact, is an author who can still offer a significant contribution to the development of the different socio-psychological disciplines. The recognition of the primary sources of the text and the precise identification of the editorial work make this new edition the point of reference for any scholar who wants to approach the work of Mead, and want to draw from it some crucial insights and critical reflections.

The question to be answered is why do different cultures respond to the land differently? The question is born in the tension between Native American and the Anglo macroculture valuing of the land. Using the philosophy of George Herbert Mead, it is argued that the land is seen as a social being ,in the same way that an individual sees another person. Mead's philosophy of the development of the individual begins with the relation of the developing self and a social other. That relationship defines acts acceptable within the society, including the acts of observation and reflective thought. Thus, the very process of development becomes bound by the society.
George Herbert Mead — , American philosopher and social theorist, is often classed with William James, Charles Sanders Peirce, and John Dewey as one of the most significant figures in classical American pragmatism. Yet by the middle of the twentieth-century, Mead's prestige was greatest outside of professional philosophical circles. He is considered by many to be the father of the school of Symbolic Interactionism in sociology and social psychology, although he did not use this nomenclature. Perhaps Mead's principal influence in philosophical circles occurred as a result of his friendship with John Dewey. There is little question that Mead and Dewey had an enduring influence on each other, with Mead contributing an original theory of the development of the self through communication. While Mead is best known for his work on the nature of the self and intersubjectivity, he also developed a theory of action, and a metaphysics or philosophy of nature that emphasizes emergence and temporality, in which the past and future are viewed through the lens of the present.

Chapter 5 examines the influential but contentious posthumous volumes attributed to George Herbert Mead, especially Mind, Self, and Society , and by detailing the interpretive process through which these books were constructed it approaches these volumes from a radically different direction than has been previously attempted. From the early enthusiasm to preserve a legacy to Mead after his death, a variety of proposals and sets of documents emerged. The subsequent discovery of stenographic notes fundamentally shifted the content of the volumes, but not their overall topical structure. Finally, concerns about book sales during the Great Depression led to consequential decisions on the length, content, and order of the volumes. The analysis demonstrates how an adequate understanding of Mind, Self, and Society, and the other volumes, requires tracing the social process of their construction over a course of time, including the changing desires and interpretations of social actors, the discovery and manipulation of available documents, and perceptions of practical constraints in time and money.
