In art, "medium" refers to the substance the artist uses to create a piece of artwork. For example, the medium Michelangelo used to create "David" was marble, Alexander Calder's stabiles employ painted steel plates, and Marcel Duchamp's infamous "Fountain" was made with a porcelain medium. The word medium can be used in other contexts within the art world as well. Let's explore this simple word and its sometimes confusing array of meanings. A broad use of the word medium is used to describe a specific type of art. For instance, painting is a medium, printmaking is a medium, and sculpture is a medium.

Painting has always been one of the most expressive art mediums that has allowed artists to experiment with different styles and techniques until they find their own unique artistic expression. Everything started in prehistoric times when people used pigmented powder to sketch scenes from everyday life on cave walls. We can say that these earlier artists used mediums and techniques cleverly to preserve their artwork to this day. From these ancient times on, artists around the world have continually been developing painting techniques and styles to express their aesthetic principles in the best way possible.
In visual art , mixed media describes artwork in which more than one medium or material has been employed. Mixed media art, is distinguished from multimedia art which combines visual art with non-visual elements, such as recorded sound, literature, drama, dance, motion graphics, music, or interactivity. The first modern artwork to be considered mixed media is Pablo Picasso 's collage Still Life with Chair Caning , which used paper, cloth, paint and rope to create a pseudo-3D effect. The influence of movements like Cubism and Dada contributed to the mixed media's growth in popularity throughout the 20th century with artists like Henri Matisse , Joseph Cornell , Jean Dubuffet , and Ellsworth Kelly adopting it. This led to further innovations like installations in the late 20th century.

Painting , the expression of ideas and emotions, with the creation of certain aesthetic qualities, in a two-dimensional visual language. The elements of this language—its shapes, lines, colours, tones, and textures—are used in various ways to produce sensations of volume, space, movement, and light on a flat surface. These elements are combined into expressive patterns in order to represent real or supernatural phenomena, to interpret a narrative theme, or to create wholly abstract visual relationships. Earlier cultural traditions—of tribes, religions, guilds, royal courts, and states—largely controlled the craft, form, imagery, and subject matter of painting and determined its function, whether ritualistic, devotional, decorative, entertaining, or educational. Painters were employed more as skilled artisans than as creative artists. Prominent painters were afforded the social status of scholars and courtiers; they signed their work, decided its design and often its subject and imagery, and established a more personal—if not always amicable—relationship with their patrons. During the 19th century painters in Western societies began to lose their social position and secure patronage.
