Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas HNSCCs are highly aggressive, multi-factorial tumors in the upper aerodigestive tract affecting more than half a million patients worldwide each year. Current treatment options for HNSCCs are surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or combinatorial remedies. Therefore, there is an urgent and unmet need for the identification of specific molecular signatures that better predict the clinical outcomes and markers that serve as better therapeutic targets. With recent technological advances in genomic and epigenetic analyses, our knowledge of HNSCC molecular characteristics and classification has been greatly enriched.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

The Cancer Genome Atlas profiled head and neck squamous cell carcinomas HNSCCs to provide a comprehensive landscape of somatic genomic alterations. They are characterized by phenotypic, etiologic, biologic, and clinical heterogeneity. Smoking is implicated in the rise of HNSCC in developing countries, while the role of HPV is emerging as an important factor in the rise of oropharyngeal tumors affecting non-smokers in developed countries 2. Despite surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, approximately half of all patients will die of the disease. Risk stratification for HNSCC is by anatomic site, stage, and histologic characteristics of the tumor. Except for HPV status, numerous molecular and clinical risk factors that have been investigated have limited clinical utility.

It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. Authors: Dubey , Siba P. This surgical atlas, featuring a wealth of color photographs, provides detailed step-by-step descriptions of a wide range of open head and neck procedures, including radical and conservative organ preservation, functional approaches, aesthetic and reconstructive surgeries with the use of axial and free flaps, and surgery within the narrow confines of the skull base. Individual chapters are dedicated to surgery of the nose and paranasal sinuses, larynx and trachea, thyroid, salivary glands, mandible, face and lips, and neck, the repair of external nose defects, the use of axial and free flaps, and surgical treatment of temporal bone malignancy. The atlas will be a comprehensive practical reference for clinicians in the various specialties involved in head and neck surgery, including otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, plastic surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons and surgical oncologists.

It often results from an inflammatory process that irritates the cervical muscles, nerves, or vertebrae. Posturing of the head occurs with unilateral spasm of the sternocleidomastoid muscle such that the child will position the head with the occiput rotated to the affected side and the chin rotated to the contralateral side. We recently treated 26 children who presented to the emergency department with acute nontraumatic torticollis. The most common causes were upper respiratory infection, sinusitis, otomastoiditis, cervical adenitis, and retropharyngeal abscess or cellulitis. Four patients had subluxation of the atlantoaxial joint as a result of the inflammatory process.
