In classical mathematics, analytic geometry , also known as coordinate geometry or Cartesian geometry , is the study of geometry using a coordinate system. This contrasts with synthetic geometry. Analytic geometry is used in physics and engineering , and also in aviation , rocketry , space science , and spaceflight. It is the foundation of most modern fields of geometry, including algebraic , differential , discrete and computational geometry. Usually the Cartesian coordinate system is applied to manipulate equations for planes , straight lines , and squares , often in two and sometimes three dimensions.
Osgood, W. Graustein - Macmillan and co. Smith, A. The scope is limited by the assumption that a knowledge of Algebra through quadratics must suffice for any investigation Bell - Macmillan , For the student whose interests lie in the direction of Applied Mathematics, the book provides a complete exposition of the properties of the plane, the straight line, and the conicoids. It is also intended to furnish him with a book of reference.

Analytic geometry , also called coordinate geometry , mathematical subject in which algebraic symbolism and methods are used to represent and solve problems in geometry. The importance of analytic geometry is that it establishes a correspondence between geometric curves and algebraic equations. This correspondence makes it possible to reformulate problems in geometry as equivalent problems in algebra , and vice versa; the methods of either subject can then be used to solve problems in the other. For example, computers create animations for display in games and films by manipulating algebraic equations. Apollonius of Perga c. He defined a conic as the intersection of a cone and a plane see figure. These distances correspond to coordinates of P , and the relation between these coordinates corresponds to a quadratic equation of the conic.
