Gregory Bateson was one of the most original thinkers of the late twentieth century. His research covered a vast array of different fields: anthropology, biology, psychology, and philosophy of science.
Gregory Bateson 9 May — 4 July was an English anthropologist , social scientist , linguist , visual anthropologist , semiotician , and cyberneticist whose work intersected that of many other fields. In Palo Alto , California, Bateson and colleagues developed the double-bind theory of schizophrenia. Bateson's interest in systems theory forms a thread running through his work. He was one of the original members of the core group of the Macy conferences in Cybernetics — , and the later set on Group Processes — , where he represented the social and behavioral sciences. He was interested in the relationship of these fields to epistemology. His association with the editor and author Stewart Brand helped widen his influence. Bateson was born in Grantchester in Cambridgeshire, England , on 9 May
We acknowledge the generosity of M. Bateson for the permission to publish in this site two chapters of Mind and Nature by G. The work and thought leading to this book have spread over many years, and my debts go back to include all that were acknowledged in the preface to my previous book, Steps to an Ecology of Mind. But I have tried to write to be understandable to those who have not read Steps and therefore shall acknowledge here only debts contracted since Steps was published. Even so, recent favors have been many.
This, it seems to me, is a very big and important paper]. Our civilization, which is on the block here for investigation and evaluation, has its roots in three main ancient civilizations: the Roman, the Hebrew and the Greek; and it would Seem that many of our problems are related to the fact that we have an imperialist civilization leavened or yeasted by a downtrodden, exploited colony in Palestine. In this conference, we are again going to be fighting out the conflict between the Romans and the Palestinians. You will remember that St. We can engage in that old battle either by backing the downtrodden or by backing the imperialists. If you are going to fight that battle, you have to take sides in it.
By Gregory Bateson. New York: E. Dutton, This book is the capstone to the philosophical edifice which Gregory Bateson has been building for several decades. Bateson means to be subversive, and to do his part toward the ultimate healing which has already been suggested by systems theory, cybernetics, ecology, and humanistic psychology, not to mention the works of John Muir, Mary Austin, Frank Waters, Gary Snyder, Joseph Wood Krutch, and many other western American writers. His theory of what is wrong and his hope for a truly transformative, holistic philosophy, are very much in the main line of western regional writing and will seem familiar to students of the field.

Gregory Bateson complained that scientists caused problems by seeking ways to solve narrow human difficulties. A better approach was for science to use metaphors to help people expand their thinking and illuminate the connections among various parts of the universe. The dangers appeared when people thought they could use the environment for their own purposes. This process caused them to separate themselves from the environment on which their lives depended.
